I get to be a guest on A Conversation with Jimmy and Friends, and we're going to be talking about poems based on current events.
Current events can be great sources of poetic inspiration. In this talk, we will examine poems written from news stories, looking in particular at different strategies poets employ to engage their chosen material. Whose voices speak in these poems? How can a public event allow a poet to write about a personal concern? What are the risks inherent in writing about strangers' lives? How can a poem help readers engage more meaningfully and personally with big issues of today?
